Ricky ponting announced the player of 2007

Australian captain Ricky Ponting was yesterday night named Player of the Year at the prestigious ICC Awards, held at a glittering ceremony here.

Ponting also scooped the Captain of the Year award and was named captain of both ICC ODI and Test teams of the Year, chosen by a panel of some of the greats of the game.

The 32-year-old Tasmanian has had an outstanding year with the bat, dominating at both Test and ODI level, and has also established himself as one of the most tactically aware and fearless captains in the world.

Ponting was joined on the winners’ list by his team-mates Matthew Hayden, who took the ODI Player of the Year award, and Shaun Tait, who was named Emerging Player of the Year.

For the first time, there was an award for the Associate ODI Player of the Year to mark the contribution that the non-Full Member teams are making to the world of cricket. Kenya’s all-rounder Thomas Odoyo became the inaugural winner of this award, having a fine year with both bat and ball.

Pakistan run machine Mohammad Yousuf scooped the Test Player of the Year award and Sri Lanka took the Spirit of Cricket Award.

“The past year has been another exciting one for cricket fans around the world in a time that included the ICC Champions Trophy and the ICC Cricket World Cup. These players have contributed hugely to our enjoyment,” ICC President Ray Mali said at the function.

“It is a great honour for me to receive this award. It’s not so long ago that my place in the side was far from certain so this is very pleasing for me,” accepting ODI Player of the Year Hayden said.

The hard-hitting opener has had an outstanding year in ODIs and played no small part in making sure his side took top honours at the ICC Cricket World Cup in the West Indies.

“Batting with Adam Gilchrist is always fun. I suppose the style we adopt could be regarded as risky and it’s definitely something we have talked about,” he said.

“It has been a great year for me and for the team so I am delighted to pick up this award,” he said.

ICC President Ray Mali said: “On behalf of the ICC I would like to congratulate Matthew on winning this award.”

Hayden beat off the challenge of team-mates Ricky Ponting and Glenn McGrath to secure the award.

He was presented the award by former Pakistan batsman and respected commentator Rameez Raja.

On winning the Cricketer of the Year Award, Ponting said: “It’s more of an eventful night that I thought it would be and I am honoured. It’s a great thrill for me and something I am very proud of. It’s a great achievement and something I will probably look back on this in years to come with a lot of pride.

“I am the first player to win this award twice in a row and maybe if I keep my head down there might be more around the corner,” he said.

Ponting received the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy from ICC President Ray Mali.

The other short-listed nominees for the award were Mohammad Yousuf and Shivnarine Chanderpaul. This is the second year running that Ponting has scooped the top award.

May criticises cricket’s schedule

Tim May has criticised the ICC regarding the sheer number of matches countries are expected to play, highlighting the ridiculous schedule facing Australia and India later this year. The two sides will face each other 21 times in 8 months, but their packed intinerary is just the peak of the mountain. We’ve known this would happen for years yet the ICC continue to pile on the matches and honour the boards’ and TV companies’ greed, at the players’ and spectactors’ expense.
“They were already playing each other 18 times and now they’ve thrown in another three (in Ireland),” May said. “We’re concerned about that. Players have a passion for the game and want to maintain that passion every time they play. But it’s becoming harder to play every game as though it’s their last.
“No one wants a two-bit product where blokes are only giving 75 percent because that’s all they’ve got [...]

Hair (white chap) is suing claiming racial discrimination

Indopak talk

, , ,

White people suing citing racial discrimination isn’t unheard of, yet it’s still laughable. What stands out for me is that he’s actually pulled Doctrove, the other umpire (A West Indian, hence black) into this mess. His argument is really childish. He’s been punished, and now his way of hitting back at the ICC and PCB is: “You punished me, but what about Doctrove? It was half his fault too! You guys are racist!”No, you fat &^%$, it wasn’t Doctrove’s fault. It was completely your own doing. I don’t feel like writing anymore about Hair, so I will just quote my blogging colleagues who are a lot more eloquent than me at expressing frustration…Billu writes…
Darrell Hair is like a big, fat, ugly boomerang - no matter how far you think you’ve thrown him, he keeps coming back. The latest installment in this ongoing saga involves him trying to sue the PCB [...]

ICC charges Afridi for swinging bat at fan: Faces ban

Damn you Afridi! Here is the video which I posted just now. At first, it was thought that the ICC would not be charging Afridi, but circumstances quickly changes once Malcolm Speed saw the video footage. Here is how events unfolded. From SuperCricket…
The International Cricket Council on Tuesday angrily rejected criticism that they had failed to take any action against Shahid Afridi for trying to hit a spectator with his bat due to a fear of antagonising the Pakistanis.
Afridi was caught on television jabbing his bat at a spectator after he was dismissed for 17 in the first one-day international against South Africa at SuperSport Park, but is unlikely to face any official sanction.
“The ICC Code of Conduct says the four umpires, the team managers and the CEO of the home board can all lay a charge, but they must do so within 18 hours of the end of the [...]

Who makes these rules, and why do we put up with them?

Via Cricinfo:

Andrew Symonds can be named in Australia’s World Cup squad and be replaced if he fails to recover from a serious arm injury, the ICC has ruled. Australia made the request because they are unsure how long Symonds will be out with a torn biceps.
Symonds suffered the injury during Friday night’s loss to England and had surgery on Sunday morning. Estimates on the speed of his return seem to vary from six weeks to six months, but he is in serious doubt for the tournament in the Caribbean. Australia’s first game of the World Cup is against Scotland on March 14 while the more important Super Eight stage begins on March 27.
Australia must announce their 15-man squad by Tuesday and Cricket Australia did not want to be forced into a situation where Symonds would be picked in the outfit and then have to drop out, leaving them a player [...]
