India is a land of vibrant colors and strange contradictions. The food is fragrant and tastes divine (not nearly as spicy as I expected). The traffic moves at a perilous pace and riding in the back of a auto-rickshaw is like a roller coaster ride without safety restraints. Talk about an adrenaline rush when you’re passing within centimeters of bicyclists, motorcycles, buses, taxis, and not to mention other relentless rickshaw drivers! A word of advice: “keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times” if you wish to make it alive to your destination.
While in India i met some very interesting people. There were the big-city folks living lavishly with servants taking care of their everyday needs. And then the villagers dwelling in huts made of leaves where their only means of entertainment was each other. Spending time with those villagers helped to put life [...]

As the selectors are in the process of whittling down the World Cup team from 30 probables, the only chance Shahid Afridi had, was his selection for the ODI’s against South Africa. Otherwise it would be too late and not enough match practice for him. And based on his horrendous performance in 2006, that could never have happened.
But lo and behold, he’s back, and the selectors have made it pretty clear that he has been chosen primarily because of the pre-2006 years. It’s a strange reason and poor selection on their part. Why on earth can’t Pakistan just move on and live life without him? It doesn’t make sense to me. Before the squad was announced, Wasim Bari, the chief selector said…
“It is a difficult decision, but I must say that if Afridi is recalled to the (one-day) squad it would be on the basis of his past performance,” [...]

I don’t get tired of You. Don’t grow weary
of being compassionate toward me!
All this thirst-equipment
must surely be tired of me,
the waterjar, the water-carrier.
I have a thirsty fish in me
that can never find enough
of what it’s thirsty for!
Show me the way to the Ocean!
Break these half measures,
these small containers.
All this fantasy
and grief.
Let my house be drowned […]

Will’s not one to blow his own trumpet. Instead, he pays me to do it for him. Of course, he’s in Kenya.
Most people that go to Kenya seem to go there for big game hunting. Will is hunting for new cricket talent with the World Cricket League, and he’s blogging about it for Cricinfo.
In today’s game, the Atlantic Island of Bermuda is taking on the hosts. They didn’t make a great fist of their first innings, being bowled out for 133. That they got that far was almost entirely due to their wicketkeeper, Dean Minors, who scored 52. Not the youngest of chaps, in fact he’s even older then I am, but the bright young stars of tomorrow sometimes need the wisdom of the elderly.
Anyhow Will’s over there reporting it for Cricinfo, so be sure to go check it out.

Our friend Naeem Sadiq sent us the following mail:
The mere fact that a problem is endlessly debated by great jurists, justices, Peerzadas, Zafars or Anwars does not essentially make it a complex problem. When  seemingly sensible adults get totally entangled, confused and irrational on simple matters, it may be best  to seek alternate avenues of clarity. Asking children may be one such option.
It is suggested that class five students of all schools in Pakistan be asked the following question in their social studies paper in the forthcoming final examination.
Question: Imagine you have been made the Chief Justice of Pakistan. Carefully read the following two paragraphs and respond to the statement at the end.
Article 43 of the constitution:Â “The President shall not hold any office of profit in the service of Pakistan or occupy any other position carrying the right to remuneration for the rendering of services.”
Article 244 of the constitution(Armed Forces oath): “IÂ do solemnly swear that I will bear true faith and allegiance to Pakistan and uphold the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan which embodies the will of the people, that I will not engage myself in any political activities whatsoever.”
What is the answer that you think the 5th Graders will give?

There are myriad expressions of love,
But it’s the first kiss that has the innocence of a dove.
Yet, kiss is the most passionate manifestation of those feelings,
It is so soft, so subtle, yet leaves you trembling..
The shivering of the face, the quivering of the lips,
The meeting of the eyes, the blushing of the cheek,
The closeness of two souls, the knees going weak..
And finally when you kiss,
You feel the ultimate bliss..
When those petals touch each other,
This world around us ceases to bother,
When the taste buds feel the delicacy of love,
They want to feel the ecstasy forever..
The bodies become one,
The souls touch one another,
The warmth spreads wide,
There’s a rush of blood inside..
The hands seem to lose direction,
They too want to be a part of the action,
That’s when they find the softest section,
Albeit somewhat coyly, they break the restriction..
The heaven seems to last forever,
Alas, it has to end sooner than later,
But the feeling still is now or never,
Of course, next time is always better!
Yet you feel complete for the moment,
You feel the passion flowing in your veins,
You feel the absolute divinity of love
The kiss ends, but the ecstasy remains..
Above it all, lies pure and chaste love,
You cannot plan it, you just flow with emotions,
It rebels against all the set notions,
Sets your body fluids into rapid motions..
Governed by the feeling of trust and devotion.
Indeed, the first kiss is a fond remembrance,
Its sweeter than the sweetest sugar,
Lovelier than love itself,
Closer than your soul,
Precious than your breath,
And Livelier than your heartbeat..
If you haven’t experienced the passion in kissing your shadow,
Don’t haste, let the feelings grow,
He/She is the one, if you surely know,
Then set your feelings free, let the first kiss flow..
I drowned in her lips,
Still cant some to grips,
The fact that I finally had my first kiss,
I want to live with her, I am sure of this,
Coz with her, my life wud be more beautiful than my first kiss!

The team is as low as Michael Vaughan has seen them. Meanwhile, as I write, New Zealand are making a good fist of chasing down 344, and even if they do not get there, New Zealand will take some heart from how well they are batting.
I do not think that England do themselves any favours by making it so plain that they do not like one-day cricket. Australia do not particularly like it either, but they really do like winning, and the best way to win is to keep winning. It becomes a habit.
I will take the positive view and say that England did have a plan entering the Commonwealth Bank Series, but either it was blown out of the water by Kevin Pieterson’s injury, or it has simply been blown off course by their total lack of confidence. Certainly there’s not been any backup plans.
Given England’s total disarray, they could do worse then to talk to the likes of Michael Atherton. I do not think Atherton’s plan is going to win the World Cup for England, but at least it is a plan. At the moment, England look like they are working out their plans with a dart board.

There have been so few notable English language poetry collections to have been published in Pakistan of late that it is really good to see Body Loom by the versatile Athar Tahir. He is one of Pakistan’s foremost language poets today. He is […]

The 10th day of Muharram will be on Monday January 29th, 2007.
May Allah accept our fasting insha’Allah!!
=======————===============————-
The Virtues of Allahs sacred month of Muharram:
Fasting On the Day of Ashura Expiates the Sins of the Preceding Year
When the Day of Judgment comes, we will without doubt all desire to steerclear from our sins and wish that we had done more good deeds that wouldbe a cause for removal of our bad deeds.
Of much interest to us Muslims these days should be the fasting the 9thand the 10th of Muharram. The Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, saidabout the voluntary fasting on the Day of Aashoraa:
“It expiates the sins of the preceding year.” [Saheeh Muslim]
Ibn Abbas, radhiallahu anhu, reported: “The Prophet, sallallahu alayhiwa sallam, came to al-Madeenah and saw the Jews fasting on the day ofAashooraa. He asked them about that. They replied, “This is a good day,the day on which [...]
